Senior Reflections: Leela & Christian

by: Elise Newman

As a senior, I have been reflecting on my past three years of high school as well as thinking about the months to come. In DLI Humanities with Mr. Pannone, we touched upon the thoughts and feelings that follow. We talked about the various major events that are impending for the seniors. College applications, leadership responsibilities, planning school-wide events, SIS, etc. Mr. Pannone has implemented journaling for every student in his class that we will keep up with for the entire school year. This gave me the idea to start a WiNK Senior Journal so that non-DLI Humanities students can take part. My goal is that every Senior who wants to will have the opportunity to share their experience and then check back in at the end of the year to compare their answers. Hopefully, the senior class will grow closer due to the similarities they find in each other's journals and the underclassmen will use this information in preparation for their own senior years.

This week we have an inside look at Christian Kim and Leela Choudhury's thoughts and feelings toward senior year.

Leela:

How has your senior year been so far? Why?

My senior year has been really good so far! I've been able to spend a lot of time with my friends and I really like all of my classes. It's been a little bit weird since we're now the oldest on campus and have more responsibilities but it's been fun so far!

What are you most looking forward to for your last year in high school? Why?

Honestly, I don't think there's anything specific I'm looking forward to. I'm excited to keep having fun this year and making memories with all my friends and teachers.

What is causing you the most stress currently? Why?

I'm actually really not that stressed right now. I thought all the work from my classes combined with college applications would be difficult but I'm doing fine which is kind of crazy since I do still have a lot to do. I am kind of stressed thinking about what I'm going to do after I graduate.

What three words would you use to describe how you are feeling right now? Why these words?

Happy, nervous, and calm. Happy because so far I've been able to make great memories. From managing volleyball to just being at all my classes, I'm having a pretty good time. I'm nervous because as I said before, I'm not completely confident about the future and what it holds. College is scary. And calm because although there have been a couple of difficulties and doubts, I haven't gotten too stressed or worked up about any of it.

How are you doing in relation to the college process? Did you have any November 1st deadlines?

I'm doing okay. I still have to create a whole portfolio for the schools that ask for it which requires a lot of extra work, but for the schools that don't, it's been pretty easy. Originally, I hadn't planned to apply anywhere for a November 1st deadline but on the 1st I realized there was one school I really liked that didn't require a portfolio, so in the time we had during Senior Sem I finished my personal essay, finished the overall application, and wrote the supplements needed. Luckily since I did all that, I applied to that school about an hour later. That was pretty crazy, but I'm glad I was able to get an application done.

What is your favorite class currently? Why?

My current favorite class would either be DLI Chem or Music Production. I really like all of my classes but those would have to be my favorite. In chem, I like being able to work with my lab group on a project we decided on. Although there's a lot of independent work to do in that class, I enjoy the freedom we're given to learn. For music production, that's what I'm interested in doing in college and the future so it's really nice to be able to get that prior experience.

Final Words:

Like everyone else, I think Senior year has been kind of stressful so far. Luckily, I've been able to manage that stress and all my work well and I'm doing okay. I hope to keep doing well and have a memorable senior year.

Christian:

How has your senior year been so far? Why?

So far, my senior year has been fun, but stressful. Hopefully, once my applications are in, everything will be smooth sailing.

What are you most looking forward to for your last year in high school? Why?

The main thing I'm looking forward to is probably graduating. There isn't really a lack of exciting things this year, but that'll be the peak

What is causing you the most stress currently? Why?

Right now, I'm stressed about my applications the most. Considering that it's something that will probably decide a big part of my life, why wouldn't I be stressed?

What three words would you use to describe how you are feeling right now? Why these words?

The 3 words that mean the most right now to me are excitement, stress, and exhaustion. Excitement and stress during the application process because of what could or couldn't happen, and exhaustion from the long nights of application work.

How are you doing in relation to the college process? Did you have any November 1st. deadlines?

My ED application for Colgate is going in on Monday, and I'm feeling good about it. Hopefully, it'll be the big leap I need to enter the next stage of my life.

What is your favorite class currently? Why?

At the moment, I don't have a favorite class. There was a great selection this year and it's very hard for me to choose.

Final Words:

I wish anyone reading this who is in or will be starting the application process good luck. You got this :D
